During my recent visit to the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (AUAS), I was struck by the sheer vibrancy and dynamism of this institution. Spread across multiple campuses in the heart of Amsterdam, AUAS combines cutting-edge education with the charm of a city known for its rich history, multicultural atmosphere, and innovation.

A Snapshot of AUAS

AUAS stands as the largest university of applied sciences in the Netherlands, with over 50,000 students and seven faculties across Amsterdam. The university focuses on practical education tailored to real-world challenges, with sustainability and digitalization as core themes.

The diverse academic programs cater to students passionate about bridging theory with practice. Fields like International Business, International Sports Studies, and Fashion are particularly popular among international students.

Programs That Stand Out

International Sports Studies

One of the standout programs is International Sports Studies, admitting only 75 students annually. The program offers unique specializations, including sports commerce, high-performance sports management, and sport media. Students need to have both a “head for business” and a “heart for sports.”

Here’s what caught my attention:

  • Athleticism Required: Students must be athletes themselves and even participate in a triathlon.
  • Global Internships: With four internships during the program, students gain hands-on experience in diverse global settings.
  • Specialization: The minor serves as a specialization, allowing students to tailor their education.
  • Admissions: A comprehensive process involving a theory test, business-related math, an interview, and a sports video showcasing their skills ensures only the most passionate and capable students are admitted.

International Business

The International Business program offers a flexible yet focused curriculum, where students begin with foundational studies before specializing in areas such as international finance, marketing, organizational leadership, and supply chain management.

Key features include:

  • Duration: Students can choose a three- or four-year track, with varied admission requirements.
  • Double Degree Option: A four-year program with one year abroad at partner institutions such as Berlin School of Economics or ESIC Business School in Madrid. Admission is competitive, requiring strong grades and extracurricular involvement.
  • Career Opportunities: Graduates are equipped to work in multinational companies, excelling in global trade, leadership, and business innovation.

Cycling Skills: Learning to ride a bike is essential to fully integrate into Amsterdam’s lifestyle.  My visit left me inspired and convinced that AUAS is a top choice for anyone (with cycling skills!) seeking a future-focused education in an iconic European city.
