Goucher College: A Small School with a Big Global Vision

Located in Baltimore, Goucher College continues to stand out as a nurturing, forward-thinking institution that’s deeply committed to academic rigor, student support, and global engagement. Celebrating its 140th anniversary, this college is truly a hidden gem — one that is quietly making waves in higher education.

A Strong Academic and Support System

Goucher offers more than 50 undergraduate majors and minors, with particularly strong programs in psychology, biology, chemistry, and dance. The average class size of 15–30 students ensures a personalized academic experience. The Goucher Commons Curriculum fosters critical thinking and cultural awareness through three core areas: global education, race, power and perspective, and environmental sustainability.

Students also have access to unique learning opportunities, such as using a cadaver for research (!), participating in paid summer science research, and applying for up to $3,000 in internship funding. Pre-med students will be interested in the 90% medical school acceptance rate, and the Internship Accelerator connects students with real-world experiences, including micro-internships with Goucher alumni.

A Leader in Global Education

Goucher is proud to be the #1 study abroad college, requiring 100% of students to study abroad for at least three weeks. With options ranging from direct enrollment in international universities to faculty-led global experiences, Goucher takes an individualized approach to international education. This aligns with its goal of inspiring global changemakers.

Vibrant and Inclusive Campus Life

With students hailing from 44 states and 47 countries, Goucher embraces diversity in all forms. About 13% of students are international, and one-third are first-generation college students. The college actively promotes inclusion, community-based learning, and a strong sense of belonging.

The campus features themed housing, such as a Gaming House and Language House. Even the communal bathrooms are coed—a small but telling example of the school’s inclusivity. Goucher allows students to bring animals for emotional support. Students can also have birds or fish in their rooms, whether for emotional support or not.

The school also supports affordability and access, with no application fee and a test-optional policy. The average financial aid award is $37,000. The college values demonstrated interest in the admissions process and places a strong emphasis on community and growth.

Fun fact for animal lovers – Goucher offers a minor in equine studies, and the campus is home to 26 horses.

Traditions and Campus Spirit

Goucher’s mascot is the gopher, and students often embrace their “Goucher Gopher” identity with pride. The campus spirit is strong, especially during athletic events and themed campus activities. The college’s close-knit community fosters a sense of belonging and continuity that helps traditions, big and small, thrive.

Investing in the Future

Goucher recently launched a 10-year capital campaign, which includes a transformative $55 million gift. Under the current president’s leadership, the school is investing wisely and avoiding debt, putting it in a much stronger financial position. This focus on sustainability is also reflected in buildings like the Athenaeum, which uses solar panels, recycled materials, and even energy-generating doors.  A new, 44,000-square-foot LEED-certified science center adds to Goucher’s innovative facilities.

A Place Where Students Thrive

From the professional clothing closet for interviews to paid experiential learning opportunities, Goucher takes care of its students.

Goucher is a proud member of Colleges That Change Lives. Students who thrive here are curious, open-minded, and eager to engage globally. With a vibrant student body—including 30% scholar-athletes at the Division III level—and a deeply supportive campus culture, Goucher is more than just a college. It’s a launchpad for lifelong changemakers.
