Leiden University, the oldest university in the Netherlands, holds a legacy that stretches back to its founding in 1575. My visit revealed a blend of historical charm, academic excellence, and forward-thinking innovation that defines both the university and two cities: Leiden and The Hague.

A Commitment to Impact

With a focus on societal and scientific impact through cutting-edge research, Leiden University has carved out expertise in diverse fields such as governance and politics, social sciences, languages and humanities, archaeology, crisis and security management, and artificial intelligence. This emphasis on relevance and an interdisciplinary focus ensures its graduates are equipped to tackle global challenges.

Two Unique Campus Experiences

Leiden University has two distinct campuses easily accessible by bike:

     Leiden

A picturesque city of 150,000, Leiden is renowned for its canals, windmills, and historic charm. Here, the city is the campus, with academic buildings spread throughout. The city’s green spaces, proximity to the European Space Agency, and thriving biomedical sector provide students with a well-rounded environment for learning and exploration.

    The Hague

Known as the international city of peace and justice, The Hague campus offers an entirely different vibe. With 7,000 students, it is highly international and seamlessly integrates its teaching and research into the fabric of the city. The Hague hosts five programs that reflect its global character:

  • Security Studies
  • Urban Studies
  • Political Science (International Relations and Organizations)
  • International Studies
  • Liberal Arts and Sciences (Global Challenges at Leiden University College)

In both cities, the campus blends into the urban environment, creating a unique “city-as-campus” experience.

Leiden University College (LUC): A Global Honors Experience

Leiden University College (LUC), situated in The Hague, is an international honors college with a focus on global challenges such as peace and justice, sustainability, prosperity, and diversity.

Students at LUC embark on a residential academic journey where they choose their major at the end of their first year. Options include:

  • World Politics
  • International Justice
  • Governance, Economics, and Development
  • Global Public Health
  • Earth, Energy, and Sustainability

With small class sizes, close faculty interaction, and a community-driven environment, LUC ensures students are well-prepared for master’s programs and careers in global leadership. Admissions is competitive, with a focus on motivation, extracurricular involvement, recommendations, and interviews.

Student Life: Support and Well-Being

Leiden University places a strong emphasis on student support and well-being. Orientation weeks begin in mid-August, offering new students a chance to integrate socially and academically.

Accommodation

Leiden does not own student housing (except at LUC, which is residential). Students are responsible for arranging their own accommodation, which can be challenging given the shortage of affordable housing in both cities. Starting the search early is crucial, as securing housing before arrival is a requirement.

Financial Considerations

Tuition fees range from €13,000 to €17,000 annually, with LUC at €19,295. Monthly living expenses are estimated between €950 and €1,500. While scholarships are limited, a few merit-based options are available.

Leiden University’s blend of historical legacy and forward-thinking research creates an inspiring academic environment. Whether walking the historic streets of Leiden or engaging with global initiatives in The Hague, students here are immersed in opportunities for growth and impact.

For anyone seeking a world-class education with a focus on societal and scientific contributions, Leiden University offers a unique and enriching journey. My visit left me impressed by its dedication to fostering global citizens ready to shape the future.
