Located in West Haven, Connecticut, the University of New Haven (UNH) offers a dynamic and inclusive environment for students, especially for students looking for experiential learning opportunities. During my recent tour of the university, I saw vibrant campus life, a range of unique programs, and a clear commitment to student success.
Financial Aid and Scholarships
One standout feature of UNH is its robust merit-based financial aid. Every student is automatically considered for merit scholarships ranging from $15,000 to $32,000 per year. Additional scholarships are available for honors students, members of the marching band, and Phi Theta Kappa members, as well as arts majors who submit a portfolio.
Honors Program
UNH’s Honors Program offers an enriched academic experience for high-achieving students. Applicants typically have a GPA of 3.6 or 3.7, and about 50% of invited students are accepted. Faculty play an integral role in shaping and supporting the program, ensuring a challenging yet rewarding experience.
Standout Academic Programs
UNH boasts an impressive range of programs, including:
- Tagliatela College of Engineering: Specializations in biochemistry, industrial and systems, mechanical, civil, chemical, electrical, game design, and computing, as well as computer science and cybersecurity, which has a 90% placement rate with the NSA. Calculus is an expected prerequisite for these programs.
- Henry C Lee College of Criminal Justice and Forensic Sciences: Known for its forensic scene reconstruction rooms and hands-on learning experiences. I saw rooms that looked like they were right out of a TV drama with simulated murder scenes but they were actually fun, hands on learning opportunities.
- Other Unique Majors: Pre-architecture, marine and environmental sciences, interior design, interdisciplinary studies (design your own major), esports (both major and minor, with a competitive team), and interesting business programs.
Experiential Learning
A hallmark of a UNH education is its emphasis on experiential learning. All students are required to complete an internship, research project, study abroad experience, or service-learning program. UNH also offers a satellite campus in Prato, Italy, as well as winter and summer abroad opportunities.
Campus Life
UNH provides a vibrant student life with numerous opportunities to connect and grow:
- Housing: Freshmen living outside a 30-mile radius are required to live on campus. Freshman housing is separate from upperclassmen, fostering a strong first-year community. For students seeking a blend of academic and social engagement, the Enhanced Learning Communities (ELCs) group students by major or interest. For instance, forensics students in the ELC live together, attend field trips, and interact with professors from their field.
- Clubs and Organizations: With over 150 options—including a ghost hunting club—students can explore a variety of interests.
- Dining: The dining options include rotating food trucks and an allergy room to accommodate dietary needs.
Support Services
UNH prioritizes student success through its Center for Student Success, which helps freshmen transition from high school to college and offers academic support. Advisors follow a tiered system. Freshmen are paired with a general advisor and progress to an advisor specific to their major. If a student struggles academically, the center even contacts families to provide additional support.
First-Generation Support
With 50% of the student body being first-generation college students, UNH is dedicated to creating a welcoming and supportive environment. Programs and resources are tailored to help these students navigate their college journey successfully.
Campus Highlights
- Schaub Makerspace: A hub for creativity and innovation with 3D printers, laser cutters, embroidery machines, a wood shop, a metal shop, a spray booth and much more.
- Small Class Sizes: The largest lecture hall seats just 120 students, fostering personalized attention and interaction.
- Greek Life: While there are no Greek houses, the university offers both social and academic fraternities and sororities.
Final Thoughts
The University of New Haven is a vibrant and forward-thinking institution that combines academic rigor with hands-on learning. Its diverse programs, strong support systems, and dynamic campus life make it an excellent choice for students seeking a well-rounded and engaging college experience.
