On the Road Again! University of San Francisco

On the Road Again! University of San Francisco – Location, location, location!  Full disclosure – I love San Francisco!  There are such charming neighborhoods and iconic landmarks.  Of course, like anywhere, it is not perfect, but the University of San Francisco is located in an area that is about as perfect as it gets.  On a hill overlooking the city and the San Francisco Bay, this compact and beautiful campus is one to see.  With four bus stops on [...]

On the Road Again! University of California, Berkeley

On the Road Again! University of California, Berkeley – Get ready to be challenged!  Don’t let the idyllic setting of 1,200 acres overlooking the San Francisco Bay or the 1960s vibe fool you.  This oldest of the UCs isn’t all about playing frisbee on the green, although there is plenty of green space for frisbee and people watching.  But academics rule here along with a clear intellectual tone.  Here are some of the highlights: Academics – Academics can be intense [...]

On the Road Again! Stanford University tour

On the Road Again! Stanford University – Bring your bike!  It would certainly come in handy at this beautiful and large campus with 12 miles of bike lanes.  Students already have caught on; I have only seen more bikes in the Netherlands!  Stanford is certainly as selective as any East Coast Ivy but has a decidedly California feel.  The enormous, lush, palm tree laden campus stretches from the foothills of the Santa Cruz mountains to the heart of the Silicon [...]

On the Road Again! Santa Clara University

Santa Clara University – What’s not to like with a nickname of “Claradise”?  Santa Clara, a mid-sized Jesuit university in Santa Clara, California is a gem of a college.  The Silicon Valley campus is a short ride from the San Francisco airport.  It certainly didn’t hurt that it was 70 degrees and sunny – maybe that is why all of the students seemed upbeat and happy, but it is more than the weather that keeps spirits up.  Here are some [...]

The Dreaded Personal Statement – Part Two

I must admit that it is fun to be quoted as an expert.  But, of course, it is even more satisfying when the advice is taken.  It is that time of year when high school seniors are (hopefully) putting the final touches on their Common App personal statements.  Just the words "personal statement" engender fear in the typical student.  It is precisely the personal nature of the writing that is so difficult.  After all, how many of us at 17, [...]

I never thought I would say, “I am in Cosmo!”

I read a lot of articles regarding college admissions. Usually these are in relatively scholarly publications. But, especially now, we all need a little fun. I love this article in Cosmo. It contains great advice on what would have been helpful to know before college and, of course, I love being quoted. My husband has started to tell anyone who will listen that his wife is in Cosmo! #college #university #admissions #CommunityCollege #freshman #HighSchool #Finances

Pure Joy (even during a pandemic)

Let's face it.  The past few months have not been easy and, yes, that is an understatement. With social isolation and uncertainty, fear and anxiety have reared their ugly heads. I try to find some good in every situation but even I have found that difficult lately. But it would be impossible to not be moved by the moment of pure joy in this video. IMG_8852 Trust me - this girl has not had it easy. In fact, she is [...]

The “dreaded” personal statement!

Now is the time when high school students are tackling the "dreaded" personal statement. Students can use this as a time of exploration rather than drudgery. Maybe it is going a bit too far to say that it is fun, but my students are proud of themselves and what they learn through the writing process. I am honored to have been quoted in the article below. https://outwittrade.com/how-to-write-a-college-application-essay/#terry
