Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina is a hidden gem. The lush campus feels like an arboretum. Salem has its roots in the Moravian Church. Salem is the oldest all female college in the United States, originally a sister school to Davidson College and currently the home to 400 undergraduate students. Students can take an easy stroll into vibrant downtown Winston-Salem which is only five minutes from campus. But what else makes Salem College unique?
Women’s empowerment: The curriculum at Salem is centered around empowering women. This goal is infused throughout each course. There is no Greek life on campus and all activities are aligned with leadership.
Classes and academics: Salem professors want their students to be heard. With an average class size of eight, students are encouraged to participate in discussions and freely express their opinions. If students want to venture beyond Salem College, they are able to take classes at Wake Forest University and participate in social activities at Wake Forest including being part of the marching band. Almost all students participate in research and take part in a service learning course. Salem offers many accelerated degree programs through other colleges.
First generation students: During its early days, Salem started as an all female academy. During that time, Salem accepted two enslaved students and several Native American students. Today, Salem is almost half first generation college students. Salem is racially, ethnically and socio-economically diverse, with more than forty percent of students receiving Pell Grants. There are more than 50 full tuition scholarships granted each year. According to US News and World Report, Salem College is #1 in the United States for upward social mobility.
Healthcare: Salem has a new emphasis on healthcare. The college does not offer nursing but rather is interested in leadership in healthcare. In 2023, Salem will open a health leadership lab which simulates actual healthcare dilemmas in a realistic environment.
Old Salem: Old Salem is a historic district of Winston-Salem located adjacent to Salem College’s campus. This living history museum is frequented by school groups, Salem College faculty and students and adds to the charm of the campus.
