Queen’s University Belfast: Where History, Innovation, and Opportunity Meet
When people think about studying in the United Kingdom, London often comes to mind. But after spending time at Queen’s University Belfast, I’m convinced that one of the UK’s most compelling universities is hiding in plain sight.
Located in Northern Ireland’s vibrant capital, Queen’s offers something that is surprisingly difficult to find: a world-class research university in a welcoming, affordable city that is surrounded by mountains, coastline, and centuries of fascinating history.
It quickly became one of my favorite university visits.
A University Steeped in History
Founded more than 180 years ago, Queen’s is the ninth-oldest university in the United Kingdom and a proud member of the prestigious Russell Group, a group of research-intensive universities.
Today, the university enrolls approximately 25,000 students, including about 18,000 undergraduates, while maintaining a campus that feels walkable and connected. Students from around the globe have discovered Queen’s, with more than 4,000 international students representing roughly 15% of the student body.
Belfast: One of Europe’s Most Underrated Student Cities
Sometimes a university’s greatest asset isn’t just the campus. It’s the city surrounding it.
Belfast is energetic without being overwhelming. It’s large enough to offer concerts, festivals, restaurants, and internships, yet compact enough that students can comfortably navigate daily life.

A Beautiful Campus with Modern Investment
Although Queen’s is rich in tradition, it certainly isn’t stuck in the past.
The university has invested more than £700 million into campus improvements during the past decade, including remarkable new facilities for biology, engineering, and the arts.
One of the newest additions is a stunning Student Union, only four years old, that has quickly become the social heart of campus.
Students can also choose from over 220 clubs and societies, making it easy to find their community.
What particularly impressed me was how much attention Queen’s pays to student wellbeing. The Student Union hosts a free pantry where students can obtain groceries twice each week and even operates a Swap Shop, allowing students to exchange clothing instead of purchasing new items. These thoughtful initiatives help reduce costs while building community and supporting sustainability.

Like most UK universities, bachelor’s degrees are typically completed in three years, although engineering programs may extend to four years by incorporating a master’s degree, while medicine requires five years.
Learning combines lectures, tutorials, and substantial independent study, helping students develop the self-direction employers increasingly value.
Engineering That Gets Students Hired
One of my favorite stops was the engineering facilities.
The new Boeing Laboratory, impressive flight simulator, and Formula 1 Student Garage showcase just how hands-on engineering education has become. Students don’t simply learn about aircraft. They design them. Mechanical engineering students build race cars, develop aerospace technologies, and compete internationally. Remarkably, one or two students each year even move directly into careers with Formula One racing teams.
Even more impressive is Queen’s commitment to practical experience. Approximately 70% of engineering students complete a paid 12-month placement, earning roughly £20,000 while gaining valuable industry experience before graduation.
Programs are accredited by the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, providing graduates with strong professional credentials.
Biology Beyond the Classroom
The School of Biological Sciences recently moved into a spectacular £40 million facility that opened in 2019.

What stood out wasn’t simply the building, but the career preparation. Students begin thinking about careers during their first year through a transition program. Second year focuses on preparing for placements. Third year often includes a professional placement, while the final year emphasizes graduate employment or postgraduate study. Dedicated staff help connect students with more than 1,700 employers across 20 countries.
That level of career planning is something many American universities could emulate.
Politics, History, and Tackling Global Challenges
Students interested in politics and international affairs will find an impressive range of opportunities.
Popular subjects include History, Politics, Anthropology, and Public History, which explores how societies remember the past through museums, monuments, and memorials.
Research centers focus on issues that feel especially relevant in today’s world, including:

Given Northern Ireland’s own complex history, Belfast provides a fascinating living classroom for students interested in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and political change.
Innovation Across Disciplines
One unexpected highlight was visiting the university’s Virtual Production Studio.
Using gaming technology, students collaborate across disciplines to solve real-world problems.
One project created a delirium simulator that helps healthcare professionals better understand what patients experience, demonstrating how engineering, healthcare, and the arts can work together to improve lives.
It’s exactly the kind of interdisciplinary education employers increasingly seek.
Affordability Matters
For many families, cost plays a major role in choosing a university. Queen’s compares favorably with many U.S. private universities. Average international tuition is approximately $23,500, with accommodation around $10,000 annually.
North American students may qualify for generous scholarships, including:
Competitive awards covering up to 50% of tuition
A £5,500 tuition reduction for eligible international students
Housing is guaranteed for international students, with private bedrooms, resident assistants, and locations within about a 15-minute walk of campus.
A City That Knows How to Tell Stories
No visit to Belfast would be complete without exploring the city itself. Our tour revealed a place full of remarkable stories. This is the city that gave us literary giants C.S. Lewis and Jonathan Swift. Its streets feature more than 7,000 pieces of street art, reflecting both Belfast’s troubled past and hopeful future.
At the historic Ulster Hall, the Rolling Stones performed in 1964, although the concert ended after only four songs when enthusiastic fans overwhelmed the venue. It also hosted the very first public performance of Led Zeppelin’s Stairway to Heaven.
We visited City Hall, where a statue honors abolitionist Mary Ann McCracken, and learned that one of the earliest performers at Belfast’s Grand Opera House was none other than Charlie Chaplin.
Then there was our hotel.
The Europa Hotel, where I stayed, was once known as the most bombed hotel in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. In 1995, President Bill Clinton deliberately chose to stay there in support of the peace process. I happened to stay near the Clinton Suite on the tenth floor, making history feel remarkably close.
Belfast has transformed itself into one of Europe’s most welcoming cities, and that spirit is evident everywhere.
