American University of Paris – A Global Classroom in the Heart of Paris
If you are the kind of person who is curious about the world, eager to explore new cultures, and excited by the idea of learning beyond the traditional classroom, the American University of Paris (AUP) is a place worth considering.
During my recent visit, I got a firsthand look at what makes this small, internationally focused university such a unique option for students seeking a truly global education rooted in a traditional U.S. liberal arts curriculum, but brought to life in one of the world’s most dynamic cities.
A Small, Diverse, Urban Campus
AUP enrolls about 1,100 students, creating a close-knit academic environment. Approximately 55% of students are American, with the rest representing countries from around the world. This diversity isn’t just a statistic; it shapes everyday classroom discussions and campus life.
Located in the heart of Paris, the campus is fully urban. Instead of a traditional quad, the city itself becomes an extension of the classroom.
Built for “Global Explorers”
AUP is intentionally looking for students who are intellectually curious and globally minded who want to engage with the world, not just observe it.
To support that transition, the university has created a strong foundation for first-year students:
- 10-day orientation program to help students adjust to both university life and living in Paris
- First-Year Success Program, which includes:
- A dedicated academic advisor
- A peer student advisor
- A centralized student support network housed in one building, making it easy to access resources
Housing and Student Life
First-year students are required to live in university housing, all located near campus. After that, students can use a university-supported database of vetted landlords to find independent housing in the city.
This setup allows students to gradually gain independence while still feeling supported.
Academics: Flexible, Creative, and Career-Oriented
AUP offers:
- 29 majors and 35 minors
- Average class size of just 16 students, allowing for personalized attention
Some of the most popular majors include:
- Business Administration
- Global Communications
- Psychology
- Art & Art History
- Fashion Studies
The Fashion program stands out for its focus on ethical sourcing and the business side of the industry. Similarly, the growing Food and Wine Studies program is not about hospitality, but rather the business, cultural, and economic aspects of the field.
Students interested in sciences will find options on the “softer” end (like environmental studies), but it’s important to note that AUP does not offer pre-engineering or pre-med tracks.
Learning Beyond the Classroom
One of AUP’s biggest strengths is how it integrates Paris into the academic experience.
- Classes often include museum visits and on-site study of art and culture
- The Cultural Programs Office organizes study trips
- AUP actively “pulls Paris into the classroom”
There’s also a Digital Lab focused on AI and open-source technology, reflecting the university’s commitment to modern, forward-thinking education.
Summer Programs: A Great Way to Try It Out
AUP offers three and six-week summer programs, which can be a fantastic entry point for students who aren’t quite ready to commit.
Options include:
- French immersion
- Fashion studies
- Creative writing
Many students who attend these summer sessions ultimately decide to apply, after experiencing both the academics and life in Paris.
Admissions and Cost
- Average GPA: 3.6
- Students can apply via the Common App or AUP’s own application
- There is a supplemental essay: Why AUP?
The cost of attendance is approximately $58,000 per year, but AUP does offer both:
- Need-based financial aid
- Merit-based scholarships
The American University of Paris is not for everyone—and that’s exactly the point.
It’s best suited for students who:
- Thrive in small, discussion-based classes
- Want an international peer group
- Are excited by independence and city living
- Value a U.S. style liberal arts education that emphasizes critical thinking, communication, and interdisciplinary learning and allows for flexibility in what to study
For the right student, AUP offers something rare: a chance to earn a U.S. style liberal arts degree while living and learning in one of the most culturally rich cities in the world.
