Assumption University – “Pursuit of Truth in the Company of Friends”
I recently had the opportunity to visit Assumption University in Worcester as part of the WACT consultant tour. The visit highlighted a campus grounded in Augustinian values, with a strong focus on belonging, academic quality, and affordability. One phrase that resonated was the university’s commitment to the pursuit of truth in the company of friends, which clearly shapes both the academic and student experience. It means that students can strive for a better understanding of themselves and the world without fear of being judged.
Assumption also ranks in the top four percent nationally of college’s for return on investment, reinforcing its value proposition for students and families.
Academic Experience and Outcomes
Assumption offers 37 majors and over 50 minors, including strong programs in nursing and health sciences. There are also several dual degree pathways in areas such as applied behavior analysis, business, clinical counseling psychology, rehabilitation counseling, school counseling, and special education.
The accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing is a notable option. Students must apply to the nursing program by December 1. Nursing, honors, and dual degree programs have specific GPA requirements, with nursing requiring a 3.0 GPA overall and specifically in math and science, along with a focused application essay.
Admissions operate on a rolling basis, with decisions typically released within two weeks of receipt of a completed application.
First-Year Experience and Student Support
The First Year Experience is highly structured and supportive. Every student participates in a Foundations Learning Community, taking two courses with the same cohort. These communities include workshops on skills such as time management and preparing for finals.
Advising is comprehensive and personalized. Each student is supported by a team that includes a faculty academic advisor, a career coach, and an alumni advisor. Faculty also offer six hours of office hours weekly, making support accessible.
Additional support systems include:
- Blue, a chatbot that proactively checks in with students
- A dedicated Care Team
- An International Student Success Center
Campus Life and Student Engagement
Student involvement is a major strength at Assumption. All clubs and organizations are 100 percent student run, creating meaningful leadership opportunities.
Key campus traditions and programs include:
- Duck Day celebrating the arrival of spring when ducks released into the campus pond
- Days of Service
- Best Buddies Friendship Ball
- The Center for Civic Friendship, which promotes thoughtful dialogue and challenging conversations in a supportive environment
Housing, Athletics and Community
Housing is guaranteed for all four years, with suite and apartment style options available for upperclassmen. This contributes to a strong residential experience while still supporting commuters, about 15% of the student population. Student Affairs emphasizes leadership development and engagement across all areas of campus life.
Assumption competes in 26 Division II sports, with 38 percent of students participating as student athletes. The campus culture emphasizes a balance between academics and athletics.
Most students come from New England, contributing to a close-knit and regionally connected community.
Global Opportunities
Assumption has many opportunities for study abroad. One of the unique offerings is the university’s campus in Rome, located just five minutes from Vatican City. Students can study there for ten days, one month, or even a full academic year, providing flexible global learning opportunities.
Faith and Campus Values
The Chapel of the Holy Spirit serves as a central space for reflection and community, along with an active ministry center. The Augustinian tradition is visible throughout campus life, emphasizing community, belonging, and shared intellectual exploration.
Scholarships and Affordability
Affordability is emphasized. Assumption will try its best to make the college affordable for all qualified students. Merit scholarships range from $21,000 to $35,000 annually and are awarded automatically during the admissions process. Several additional scholarships are available for students from Catholic high schools.
Assumption University offers a well-rounded experience that combines strong academics, intentional student support, and a values-driven community. Its emphasis on friendship, dialogue, and student success creates an environment where students are both challenged and supported throughout their college journey.
